Sumizome Shooting vol.4 – The Contrast of Black and White and Red in “Streaming Bridge

The theme of Sumizome Shooting vol.4 is “Nagare-bashi” (flowing bridge). The history and emotional landscape where people have been coming and going since ancient times was expressed in sumizome-dyed Uchikake.

Following the gray color, this time we created black-and-white and red color. The base color is white, and the ink is boldly drawn with a brush and blown away by the wind to express “roots,” or roots. This symbolizes the strength of life that has been passed down through time.

The lining is a vivid red. It seems to represent the passion hidden within, or the weight of history.

Careful sewing of the 10-meter-long fabric with a sewing machine required patience and concentration. Cotton was added to the hem to create a soft and fluffy silhouette.

The black-and-white and red contrasts of this ink-dyed Uchikake set on a “Nagare-bashi” (flowing bridge) are a reflection of the Japanese sense of beauty and the modern age. It can be said to be an attempt to break new ground by fusing the Japanese sense of beauty with modern sensibilities.
